A LETTER FROM THE AMERICAN FAMILY ASSOCIATION

Governor Corbett Needs to Hear From You!
May 27, 2014

It’s been one week since Judge John E. Jones III declared our Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional, stating in footnote number 12 on page 37 of the decision that all efforts to define marriage as only between one man and one woman is discriminatory.

It’s been six days — only one day after Jones’ decision — that Governor Tom Corbett announced he would not appeal the decision stating, “Given the high legal threshold set forth b y Judge Jones in this case, the case is extremely unlikely to succeed on appeal. Therefore, after review of the opinion and on the advice of my Commonwealth legal team, I have decided not to appeal Judge Jones’ decision.”

Just imagine if our Founding Fathers  had listened to the voices that were telling them there was no way they could win against Great Britain! Instead of listening to those voices, they fought for freedom from a tyrannical government because they truly believed in it. They and others have taught us that if you say you believe in something, you will fight for it.

Where in either the US or PA Constitutions is the authority given to any judge to write laws?  Nowhere!
Even though Governor Corbett made his announcement on May 21, an appeal could still be filed within 30 days — June 19.  Governor Corbett needs to hear from you!

TAKE ACTION

1.  Sign our online petition to the Governor asking for him to appeal.
2.  Download a petition to circulate and return to the AFA of PA ASAP, but no later than June 15.
3.  Call Governor Corbett’s Regional Office nearest you.  You can find the contact information here. These calls need to be going into the Governor’s offices 24/7! Ask the Governor to appeal this outrageous decision. Judge Jones has no constitutional authority to make laws from the bench.  (If you call during non-office hours, as these calls are critical also, kindly ask for a response.)
4.  Contact at least five other people and ask them to call the governor’s office.  If they agree, ask them to also contact five other people, who in turn will call the governor’s office and ask five other p eople to make the calls, and so on and so forth to start a tidal wave of calls into the governor’s offices.
5.  Contact your county’s Register of Wills (they issue the marriage licenses in the county) and ask if they intend to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples or will they protest the ruling.

Sign the Petition to Gov. Corbett now!

It is very important that you forward this alert to your friends and family members.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE PENNSYLVANIA CATHOLIC CONFERENCE

PLEASE READ AND TAKE ACTION!

AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE PENNSYLVANIA CATHOLIC CONFERENCE

For many years, the annual state budget for   textbooks and other instructional materials for non-public schools had increased at the same rate as the increase in public school subsidies. Whether the students attend public or nonpublic schools, their parents are taxpayers, so treating all students equitably in regards to textbooks makes sense. While public schools received exponentially more funding from the state and federal government via our tax dollars, textbooks   are a basic need that are given to the students, not the schools.

However, in recent years, the public school students received an increase when the non-public students did not. In fact, even though public school enrollment has decreased for the last five years, the public school subsidy has been increased for 4 out of those 5 years. Nonpublic schools have received either a decrease or no increase for 5 straight years, while the cost of providing each textbook to the students has continued to increase.

Education of our students is vital to the future success of our state. Investing today in textbooks will help shape community leaders for years to come, and those textbooks should be distributed equitably to all of the students in the Commonwealth. Please send a message TODAY to your legislators in support of equal textbook funding.
