A MESSAGE FROM THE NATIONAL COMMITTEE FOR A HUMAN LIFE AMENDMENT

We are forwarding this message on behalf of the National Committee for a Human Life Amendment:

September 26, 2013

Dear Friend,

It is important that you act now! Members of Congress should be urged to work for approval of the Health Care Conscience Rights Act (H.R. 940. S. 1204) as part of ‘must-pass’ legislation they are now considering: a Continuing Resolution, or CR, to keep the government funded on a temporary basis, and a bill to raise the federal debt ceiling. Please click on the link below to send messages to your Representative and two Senators as well as to Speaker Boehner.

The new fiscal year starts October 1. A CR of some kind must be passed by that date to keep the government funded on a temporary basis. The federal debt ceiling issue also must be resolved within the next month or so.

Some background. Under the new health care law, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) requires most health plans to cover “preventive services for women,” including drugs and procedures that many citizens find objectionable for moral and religious reasons.  These objectionable items include sterilization, FDA-approved birth control (such as the IUD, Depo-Provera, “morning-after” pills, and the abortion-inducing drug Ella), and “education and counseling” to promote these to all “women of reproductive capacity,” including minor girls.  Under the final rule released by HHS on June 28, the mandate allows only a very narrow exemption for a “religious employer,” chiefly aimed at what HHS calls “houses of worship.”  Other religious organizations offering education, health care and charitable services do not qualify for the exemption. The mandate will be enforced against them beginning January 1, 2014, under an “accommodation” that only changes the way the objectionable items must be provided to all employees and their dependents. There is no exemption or delay for individuals, for non-religious pro-life organizations, or for businesses owned and operated by families with moral or religious objections.

Thanks for all you do in support of life.

POPE FRANCIS CALLS FOR A UNIVERSAY DAY OF FASTING AND PRAYER ON SATURDAY, 9/7

Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, has called for a Universal Day of Fasting and Prayer for Peace in Syria and all places of conflict for this Saturday evening, September 7, 2013.  He made an urgent appeal for the precious gift of peace.  With the utmost firmness, the Pope condemned the use of chemical weapons and recalled for us that “war begets war, violence begets violence.”  All of our efforts, Pope Francis pleased, must be for peace, internationally and individually.  The Holy Father urged Catholics and all people to pursue peace, peace born from a culture of encounter and dialogue with one another, and to participate in this day of fasting and prayer in whatever way possible.

This Saturday, September 7, 2013, the Vigil of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is a universal day of fasting and prayer for peace in Syria, the Middle East and throughout the world.  In Rome, at Saint Peter’s Square, on that day, the Holy Father will lead a gathering in prayer and in a spirit of penance, asking God for the gift of peace in Syria and all places of conflict.  The Pope asks all local churches to assemble for the same intention in a similar way.

Therefore, at Saint Frances Cabrini Church, the Most Blessed Sacrament will be exposed for adoration and prayers for peace on Saturday, September 7 following the 9:30 AM Mass and continuing until 5:00 PM.  We urge parishioners to come and offer prayers of peace.

Also, Archbishop Charles J. Chaput will open the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Philadelphia from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM for all Catholics and all people to come and pray for peace.  The Most Blessed Sacrament will be exposed for adoration.  Communal prayers for peace will be offered on the hour.

All Catholics are encouraged to observe a personal fast day on Saturday, September 7, 2013.  This fast may take the form of simple meals or no food in between meals or refraining from meals.
