Lenten Penitential Disciplines on the Solemnity of Saint Joseph
Tomorrow, Friday, March 19, 2021 is the Solemnity of Saint Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Solemnities are the highest rank of liturgical observance. As they are likened to a Sunday, the prescribed penance of Lent is not obligatory.
The Universal Law of the Church (Canon 1251) instructs that abstinence from meat which is observed on the Fridays of Lent is not binding when a solemnity should fall on a Friday. So, it is permissible to eat meat on Saint Joseph’s Day without violating the Lenten discipline.
This year, the Solemnity of Saint Joseph takes on special significance as it occurs during the Year of Saint Joseph, patron and protector of the Universal Church. The faithful are encouraged to honor Saint Joseph in some way.

March is Down Syndrome Awareness Month and Developmental Disabilities Month
The month of March is dedicated to raising awareness about the inclusion of persons with developmental disabilities* in the Church and all areas of community life. Pope Francis’ 2019 message at the International Day for Persons with Disabilities, stated: “We are called to recognize in every person with disabilities, even complex and serious disabilities, a unique contribution to the common good through their original life stories. …and to recognize them as persons of equal dignity, as brothers and sisters in humanity.”
*Developmental disabilities are impairments in physical, learning, language or behavior areas, including autism spectrum disorders, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and learning or intellectual disabilities.

Contact Your Senator Regarding the Equality Act
Urgent: So-Called Equality Act Passes the US House — Tell Your US Senator to Vote No!
We know you care deeply about family, faith, and freedom – which is why we are asking you to take one minute right now to contact Senators Casey and Toomey to tell them to vote NO on the so-called Equality Act. While this dangerous legislation passed the US House yesterday, it is not too late to stop it in the US Senate.
In adding sexual orientation and gender identity to US Civil Rights laws, here’s how your foundational rights and freedoms would be harmed.
The Equality Act would:
- Punish religious employers, like Christian schools, if they do not hire LGBT staff;
- Open up dorms so that your daughter’s roomate would be determined by gender identity, not by sex;
- Open up women’s shelters to men;
- Open bathrooms, changing areas, and showers to the opposite sex;
- Allow men who identify as women to compete in women’s sports;
- Shut down religious foster care if such agencies seek to exclusively place children in homes with a mother and father;
- Force doctors to remove healthy body parts from those who want gender-reassignment surgery;
- Force doctors to stop the puberty of children and inject opposite sex hormones into kids;
- Require wedding service providers to support same-sex weddings that they oppose for conscience reasons;
- And the list goes on!
We expected this to pass the US House; the real fight will be in the US Senate.
Click here to take action now and make your voice heard. It’s not too late to stop this!
