Archbishop Pérez’s Statement on Naming of 21 New Cardinals

Statement of Most Reverend Nelson J. Pérez on Naming of 21 New Cardinals

In the name of the faithful of the Church of Philadelphia, I extend prayerful congratulations to the 21 new Cardinals created by Pope Francis. In a special way we pray for those with close ties to the United States. Cardinal-designate Christophe Pierre, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, and Cardinal-designate Robert Prevost, Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and a native of Chicago, will be formally elevated to the College of Cardinals by Pope Francis in September.  Let us all join in expressing gratitude to Pope Francis for making these appointments and in praying for all those preparing to accept this new role in service to the Universal Church.

Archbishop Nelson J. Pérez Statement on the Shooting in Philadelphia’s Kingsessing Neighborhood

Statement of Archbishop Nelson J. Pérez Regarding the Shooting in Philadelphia’s Kingsessing Neighborhood

“Earlier this week, our city was gripped by profound sadness and shock reeling in the aftermath of the mass shooting in the Kingsessing neighborhood. Five innocent people were killed and others, including young children, were injured. Thanks to the swift and brave action of law enforcement, the assailant was apprehended and further loss of life was prevented.

We all share a responsibility to show love for our neighbors, and treat them with dignity and respect. At this moment of deep pain and mourning, I ask all people of goodwill to pray for the souls of the victims of the Kingsessing neighborhood shooting and that God will bring strength to all those coping with voids that cannot be filled. May the Lord pour His mercy upon them and hold them in His loving embrace. May He will embolden and strengthen all of us to build and defend a culture of love and respect for all of our brothers and sisters.”

Please Support the Lifeline Scholarship Program

The Pennsylvania Catholic Conference is asking for your help in urging state lawmakers to support an important vehicle in providing school choice to as many students and families as possible in Pennsylvania. Catholic schools would benefit as well.

We’re talking about the Lifeline Scholarship Program, which would offer a scholarship to any student residing in a public school ranked in the bottom 15 percent in performance. Students could use these scholarships to attend a nonpublic school.

Two bills have been introduced, one each in the PA House and Senate, which would fund this new scholarship program through a line item in the budget. The amount of funding dedicated to this new program will determine the number of students it could help. We are pressing for Lifeline Scholarships to be a part of the final budget, funded at an amount that would help as many students as possible.

Gov. Shapiro has repeatedly endorsed the concept, and momentum is building with Republicans and Democrats toward inclusion in the final state budget deal. Please help us see this to the finish line!
